Logistics
A logistics center of superlatives
At its warehousing logistics center in Villmergen, Swiss Post is setting new standards for efficiency, sustainability, quality and customer benefits. The center is strengthening the growth areas of goods and healthcare logistics and, in turn, Swiss Post’s strategy for the future.
Recent years have shown how important efficient logistics are for security of supply. Industries such as medical technology and retail must be able to rely on functioning supply chains, even in exceptional situations. To cushion the impact of production disruptions, interrupted transport routes and fluctuations in demand, companies are building up domestic storage capacities. The demand for warehouse space in Switzerland is therefore likely to continue rising. Swiss Post Cargo, Swiss Post’s goods logistics division, offers highly automated, scalable logistics solutions at its Villmergen site that relieve the burden on companies, ensure their connection to the international goods flow and stabilize their supply chains. At its opening in October 2025, the media described Villmergen as a “logistics center of superlatives”.

At Villmergen, we are making targeted investments in the future of Swiss logistics.
Flexible infrastructure for a range of industries
In Villmergen, business customers can store a wide variety of products in an area the size of eight football pitches – from small parts and electrical appliances to dangerous substances and medicines. The center combines a high-bay warehouse offering 24,000 pallet spaces with two automated small parts warehouses providing 125,000 container spaces and an automated central section warehouse containing 20,000 shelf spaces. In the automated storage areas, an oxygen-reduced atmosphere prevents valuable stored goods from igniting. This combination is unique to Swiss Post Cargo’s warehouse infrastructure and services.

Efficient fulfilment solutions for e-commerce
The automated systems enable fast storage and retrieval, precise picking and scalable processes. Other services are also available, such as labelling, assembling products and packaging promotional items. Swiss Post sets up workspaces flexibly based on its customers’ needs in order to provide these services on their behalf. This allows online retailers to outsource some or all of their logistics processes to Swiss Post Cargo and devote themselves entirely to customer care.

Secure supply of healthcare products
Customers from the healthcare sector store products such as medicines, surgical instruments and knee prostheses in Villmergen under strictly controlled conditions, which are reviewed by Swissmedic and certified in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice and Good Distribution Practice. These two standards cover processes, the environment and quality assurance guidelines that meet the stringent requirements for the manufacture and distribution of medicines and medical devices. Temperature, hygiene and safety are also monitored continually to ensure that products arrive at healthcare facilities reliably and in impeccable condition and that traceability is guaranteed at all times. Swiss Post is responsible for delivering the medical goods quickly, safely and correctly. This helps hospitals to consolidate their processes and reduce costs.

Advanced construction and the highest certification standards
The facility supports Swiss Post’s climate targets. Right from the planning stage, the company factored in environmental, economic and social sustainability criteria over the entire life cycle of the building. Thanks to its modular architecture, spaces and technologies can be adapted flexibly to changing market requirements. The photovoltaic system on the roof also produces over 1,300 megawatt hours of electricity each year, covering around 80 percent of the building’s energy requirements. Heat is supplied efficiently via geothermal energy, and the first electric shuttle vehicles are already connecting Swiss Post Cargo locations. In spring 2026, Swiss Post will start using a charging infrastructure for electrically powered trucks and Postbuses at Villmergen logistics center. In addition, the center meets the highest quality requirements thanks to its certification in ISO standards 9001, 14001, 45001 and 22000.
