Digital democracy: electronic elections and votes are growing in popularity
Four cantons already use Swiss Post’s e-voting system for secure digital voting. Lucerne will join them from 2026, with other cantons to follow. Public approval shows that e-voting is an important building block for the democracy of tomorrow.
Since the start of trial operations with Swiss Post’s e-voting system, four cantons – Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen, Graubünden and Thurgau – have successfully held around a dozen digital contests, including the 2023 national elections. Experience to date confirms that the system is secure, stable and user-friendly.
Demand is growing accordingly. The Canton of Lucerne will introduce e-voting from 2026, with more cantons set to follow. The public also supports digital voting. A representative survey by the YouGov market research network shows that 78 percent of the population would like to see e-voting as a useful addition to voting at the ballot box or by post. Better access for Swiss citizens resident abroad, ease of use and the potential for higher voter turnout are particularly appreciated. Around two thirds of those surveyed explicitly trust Swiss Post’s solution.
Security creates trust
Security is the key requirement for digital democracy and is therefore a top priority for Swiss Post. For this reason, it is committed to maximum transparency. Since 2021, it has had its e-voting system tested publicly worldwide, most recently in 2025. The legally required intrusion test by ethical hackers from 54 countries once again confirmed the solution’s high security standards. The digital ballot box successfully withstood 8,800 attacks.
More participation thanks to digital access
E-voting expands access to political participation. At present, the service is available to Swiss citizens resident abroad from four cantons. Two thirds use it because postal delivery often takes too long, depending on where they live abroad. Basel-Stadt also offers the service to people with disabilities. People with visual impairments in particular benefit because they can exercise their voting rights independently and in secret. In the cantons of St. Gallen and Graubünden, domestic voters in selected municipalities can also vote electronically, and the number of municipalities is growing. Basel-Stadt and Thurgau are planning to offer e-voting to all their residents from 2026 − a strong vote of confidence in Swiss Post’s system.
Swiss Post supports e-voting. It ensures secure operation and is constantly developing both the technology and the organization behind the system. This is done in close cooperation with the federal government and the cantons. Digital democracy needs reliable partners – and the highest level of security.

Through services such as e-voting and the electronic patient record (EPR), Swiss Post is creating new, secure access to key social services. The aim is to design digital solutions that complement the existing infrastructure in a meaningful way – transparently, inclusively and securely. This will ensure that Swiss Post remains an essential cornerstone of public service in Switzerland, even in the digital age.
