Autonomous mobility in everyday life

Swiss Post is bringing autonomous driving into everyday life: the “AmiGo” on-demand service complements public transport where traditional Postbus routes cannot reach – flexibly, electrically and as part of the regular public transport system.

Ten years after the first autonomous shuttles were unveiled in Sion, PostBus is once again in the spotlight with autonomous vehicles. Unlike the previous pilot project, which involved SmartShuttles travelling at 20 km/h through the capital of Valais, the conditions for the AmiGo project are fundamentally different: technology and software have evolved, and legislation allows autonomous driving in Switzerland.

Innovative service for more flexibility in public transport

Swiss Post hopes that AmiGo will supplement public transport in a targeted and efficient manner. The self-driving vehicles will primarily be used when existing scheduled services do not offer ideal coverage – for example, in rural and less well-connected regions or during off-peak times. This is Swiss Post’s response to demand from its customers, who increasingly want flexible and individual public transport services. The aim is to provide a regular mobility service with a total of 25 vehicles covering an area of around 80 square kilometres in the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen. AmiGo is currently the largest planned service using autonomous vehicles in Europe.

The self-driving vehicles will be available on demand from 2027: customers will book their journey via app and specify their route within a selected radius. The system will automatically pool similar journeys, improving capacity utilization. Each vehicle can seat up to four people and has enough storage space for luggage. The entire fleet is electric. This means customers benefit from a service that adapts to their everyday lives and brings new mobility to life.

Shaping the public transport of the future with strong partners

Project partners include the cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Thurgau, the Federal Office of Transport (FOT), the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) and Touring Club Switzerland. The technology partner is the Chinese company Baidu Apollo, a world leader in autonomous driving. In China, the company operates a fleet of several thousand vehicles that are in regular service every day. Committed partners have made this innovative on-demand service possible, and Swiss Post is working with them to shape the future of public transport.

In January 2026, the first vehicles headed out on the roads to map journeys in the region – without customers and with a safety driver on board. From mid-2026, the first test runs will be carried out with a selected user group, also accompanied by security staff. Regular services are planned from spring 2027.
