Mobility

Tailor-made for the electric future

The new Postbus depot in Wilderswil (Canton of Bern) demonstrates how Swiss Post is systematically developing its electric operations. Its infrastructure has been designed for electromobility from the outset and supports the ongoing conversion of the fleet to fossil-free drive systems.

Since the beginning of 2025, Postbuses for journeys in the Interlaken region have been departing from the new depot in Wilderswil. Swiss Post worked with indoor and outdoor sports providers to construct a new building there. And the special feature of this initiative? Because Swiss Post was closely involved in the planning phase, Wilderswil is the first in-house Postbus depot in Switzerland to be systematically geared towards electric mobility requirements right from the outset. Up to 18 Postbuses can be charged at the same time in the garage. For short-term charging during operation, drivers can access two additional fast charging points at Interlaken West railway station. This ensures that electric services are reliable, even during demanding day-to-day operations.

The building in Wilderswil is also setting standards for energy. A photovoltaic system on the roof supplies 150 to 170 megawatt hours of electricity per year. This amount of energy covers a significant part of the charging requirements for the Postbuses in the depot and is enough to supply several vehicles with power on regular scheduled routes throughout the year. The waste heat from the charging stations is used to produce hot water. This also benefits partners throughout the building: thanks to the e-Postbuses, their customers can take a hot shower after an outdoor adventure or a training session in the climbing hall.

The electrification of the Postbus fleet in the Bernese Oberland is continuing. Following on from Interlaken, Swiss Post opened a new depot in the Spiez region at the end of 2025, which is also geared towards e-mobility. Fast charging stations offer additional support at Spiez railway station. This is Swiss Post’s approach to developing its mobility – in everyday operations and with a view to the future.

Electrification is progressing throughout Switzerland

By converting its current fleet of 2,300 Postbuses throughout Switzerland, Swiss Post has considerable potential to improve its CO₂ performance. For this reason, Swiss Post wants to convert all Postbuses to fossil-free drive systems by the end of 2035. To charge the batteries, the company uses 100 percent electricity from renewable energy sources. Advances in battery technology, vehicles and charging infrastructure also ensure that the move away from diesel is not only environmentally friendly, but also economically viable.
